Jacky Fisher

Reforming naval officer

John Arbuthnot Fisher, often called Jacky Fisher, was one of the most influential reforming figures in modern Royal Navy history. His career extended from active service into high-level administration and strategic reorganization.

Fisher became closely associated with modernization in ships, training, manpower policy, and strategic planning. He played a central part in preparing the navy for the industrial age, when technology, speed, and firepower were changing the character of maritime warfare.

He is significant because his reforms affected the structure and direction of the service as a whole. Fisher belongs at the centre of the history of the modern British fleet.
