Personnel Profile

Edward Pellew

Admiral

Edward Pellew was one of the most energetic officers of the wars against France and later rose to senior rank in the Royal Navy. His reputation was first built through active fighting service, especially in frigates, before he entered the higher levels of command.

Pellew’s biography combines daring seamanship with the longer institutional career that followed success at sea. He reflects the way distinguished captains could become senior commanders in the wartime navy.

He is significant because his life links the aggressive small-ship warfare of the period to later admiralty command. Pellew belongs to both the heroic and institutional history of the Napoleonic fleet.
