Samuel Hood

Samuel Hood was one of the most respected Royal Navy officers of the later eighteenth century. His long career made him an important bridge between the navy of the Seven Years’ War and the service that later fought Revolutionary France.

Hood’s reputation rested on professionalism, steadiness, and command ability in fleet warfare. He belonged to the generation that preserved and deepened the standards of operational competence upon which British maritime power depended.
