Personnel Profile

Henry Dundas, 1st Viscount Melville

First Lord of the Admiralty

Henry Dundas, later Viscount Melville, served as First Lord of the Admiralty during the long conflict with Napoleonic France. His office belonged to the political direction of British sea power at a moment of national dependence on the fleet.

The First Lord in this period had to work closely with naval professionals, Parliament, and the wider machinery of wartime government. Dundas’s service reflected the political oversight required to sustain Britain’s maritime war effort.

He is significant because he belongs to the ministerial history of naval administration in a major wartime era. Melville stands among the political heads of the Admiralty during the French wars.
