Personnel Profile

Alan West

Admiral

Alan West served as First Sea Lord in the early twenty-first century, when the Royal Navy was operating in a post-Cold War environment shaped by expeditionary warfare, terrorism, and coalition operations. His Admiralty leadership belonged to a navy balancing new tasks with older traditions.

The professional head of the service in this period had to address force design, personnel, public identity, and the navy’s role in joint campaigns overseas. West’s tenure reflected the increased public and political visibility of modern defence leadership.

He is significant because he helped represent and guide the Royal Navy in the opening years of the twenty-first century. West belongs to the recent history of the Admiralty.
