Personnel Profile

Bruce Fraser

Admiral of the Fleet

Bruce Fraser served as First Sea Lord in the years immediately after the Second World War. His Admiralty leadership belonged to the difficult transition from global wartime fleet operations to a postwar service facing financial, political, and strategic redefinition.

Fraser’s career reflected the task of preserving professional standards while adjusting to demobilization, technological change, and the beginning of the Cold War. The office of First Sea Lord had become central to managing institutional adaptation as well as war.

He is significant because he stands in the postwar reorganization of British naval power. Fraser belongs to the early Cold War history of the Admiralty.
