Personnel Profile

Henry Leach

Admiral of the Fleet

Henry Leach served as First Sea Lord during the Falklands War and belongs to the late Cold War history of the Royal Navy. His Admiralty leadership was tested by the sudden return of major maritime combat in 1982.

The Falklands conflict gave the office a direct wartime significance not seen for many years, requiring strategic judgement, political persuasion, and confidence in the fleet’s ability to operate at long range. Leach’s tenure therefore joined policy with active war leadership.

He is significant because his period as First Sea Lord stands at the centre of Britain’s late twentieth-century naval history. Leach belongs to the Admiralty story of the South Atlantic war.
