Personnel Profile

Michael Pollock

Admiral of the Fleet

Michael Pollock served as First Sea Lord during the 1970s, a period in which the Royal Navy’s strategic role was being reconsidered within alliance frameworks and national defence constraints. His Admiralty leadership belonged to the mature Cold War navy.

Pollock’s tenure reflected questions of anti-submarine warfare, deterrence, force balance, and the maintenance of professional standards within a service that could not depend on past imperial assumptions. The office required both strategic clarity and institutional resilience.

He is significant because his tenure belongs to the late Cold War history of British sea power. Pollock stands among the important modern First Sea Lords.
