Rhoderick McGrigor

Admiral of the Fleet

Rhoderick McGrigor served as First Sea Lord in the early Cold War period, when the Royal Navy was redefining its role in a world of alliance warfare, nuclear deterrence, and reduced imperial resources. His Admiralty service belonged to that period of strategic adjustment.

The navy under McGrigor had to preserve professionalism while adapting to anti-submarine warfare, carrier questions, and the new demands of alliance planning. Senior leadership now required a combination of continuity and restraint.

He is significant because his tenure belongs to the transformation of the postwar Royal Navy. McGrigor stands in the early Cold War history of the First Sea Lord’s office.
