Personnel Profile

Sir Arthur Wilson

Admiral of the Fleet

Sir Arthur Wilson served as First Sea Lord after a long career in the late Victorian and Edwardian Royal Navy. He belonged to the generation of senior officers responsible for adapting the fleet to new weapons and technologies in the years before 1914.

Wilson’s leadership fell in a period when the Admiralty had to think seriously about submarines, torpedoes, modern gunnery, and the strategic distribution of fleets. As professional head, he stood within the senior command structure that prepared the navy for industrial war.

He is significant because his Admiralty service belongs to the transition from the Victorian fleet to the modern battlefleet. Wilson forms part of the institutional history of the pre-war Royal Navy.
