Personnel Profile

Sir Ernle Chatfield

Admiral of the Fleet

Sir Ernle Chatfield served as First Sea Lord during the interwar years, when the Royal Navy had to adapt to treaty limits, financial restraint, and shifting global threats. His office was central to debates over fleet size, priorities, and future war planning.

Chatfield’s Admiralty service belonged to a difficult strategic environment in which Britain still relied on maritime power but could not sustain unlimited naval expenditure. The First Sea Lord had to balance ambition, realism, and institutional continuity.

He is significant because he helped shape the interwar navy that entered the Second World War. Chatfield belongs to the policy and planning history of the Admiralty between 1918 and 1939.
