Sir John Jellicoe
Admiral of the Fleet
Sir John Jellicoe became First Sea Lord after serving as commander of the Grand Fleet in the First World War. He brought to the Admiralty the experience of modern fleet command in the dreadnought era, when strategy, communications, and industrial logistics were closely intertwined.
As First Sea Lord, Jellicoe worked within the demanding environment of total war, where Admiralty leadership had to balance convoy protection, fleet readiness, shipping priorities, and alliance coordination. His service connected operational experience to institutional direction at the highest level.
