Sir Rosslyn Wemyss

Admiral of the Fleet

Sir Rosslyn Wemyss served as First Sea Lord during the final phase of the First World War. His Admiralty role belonged to a period of high strategic coordination, inter-Allied planning, and pressure on shipping and naval resources.

Wemyss’s career reflected the broadening responsibilities of the office, which now included liaison with political leaders, allies, and the wider machinery of total war. Admiralty direction in this period extended far beyond direct command at sea.

He is significant because his tenure illustrates the increasingly strategic and international character of naval leadership in modern war. Wemyss belongs to the institutional history of the wartime Admiralty.
