Personnel Profile

Alexander Cochrane

Naval officer

Alexander Cochrane was a Royal Navy officer who served during the wars against Revolutionary and Napoleonic France and later in the War of 1812. His career is especially associated with operations in North American and Atlantic waters.

He played a role in blockade warfare, coastal pressure, and the use of naval force in support of wider strategic aims. Such operations involved more than fleet battle alone, requiring endurance, mobility, and close coordination with imperial and military objectives.

Cochrane is significant because his service illustrates the flexible use of maritime power in raiding, coercion, and expeditionary warfare. He belongs to the operational history of Britain’s global war at sea.
