Fire-control systems

Fire-control systems revolutionised naval gunnery by improving accuracy and coordination. Early systems relied on manual calculations, but advances in optics, rangefinding, and mechanical computing allowed ships to engage targets at much greater distances. Centralised control meant that all guns could be directed as a single system.

During the twentieth century, fire-control systems became increasingly sophisticated, incorporating radar and electronic data processing. These developments enhanced the effectiveness of naval artillery and later missile systems. Accurate fire control was essential for maintaining combat superiority in both world wars and beyond.
